International regulations

The rules for using snow chains differ from fully permitted through permitted under certain conditions. Find out what applies for your country.

Regulations by country

Albania - Snow chains for drive axle must be carried in the vehicle. Use according to traffic signs and road conditions.

Austria - Snow chains must be carried in vehicle for at least two drive axle tires from November 1 to April 15. Exceptions for public service buses apply. Use on roads covered with snow and ice.

Belarus - Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and ice.

Belgium - Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and/or ice.

Bosnia and Herzegovina - Snow chains must be carried in vehicle from November 15 to April 15. Use on roads covered with snow and ice. Fitting: at least 1 pair on drive axle.

Bulgaria - Snow chains must be carried in vehicle from November 1 to March 31. Usage is compulsory on mountain passes when indicated by traffic signs.

Croatia - Snow chains required for drive axle in certain conditions. Snow chains compulsory in Lika/Gorski Kotar region.

Czech Republic - Differing traffic signs possible. Snow chains are compulsory if indicated by traffic signs on at least 2 drive wheels of vehicles with 3 and more axles.

Denmark - Snow chains allowed from November 1 to April 15.

Estonia - Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and ice.

Finland - Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and ice.

France - Use of snow chains when indicated by traffic signs.

Germany - Use of snow chains when indicated by traffic signs.

Hungary - Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and ice. The application and entrainment of snow chains may be compulsory due to special weather conditions. In wintry conditions the entry may be rejected for foreign vehicles if no snow chains are carried on board.

Ireland - Snow chains only allowed when roads covered with snow and ice.

Italy - An anti-skid device (e.g. snow chains) must be carried in vehicle.

Kosovo - Snow chains for drive axle must be carried in the vehicle. Use according to traffic signs and conditions.

Latvia - Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and ice.

Liechtenstein - Snow chains allowed. Not necessary in valleys. In the mountains, traffic signs indicate if snow chains are compulsory.

Lithuania - Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and ice.

Luxembourg - Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and ice.

Macedonia - Snow chains must be carried in vehicle from October 15 to March 15 if vehicle has only standard tires fitted.

Montenegro - Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and ice.

Netherlands - Snow chains not allowed on public roads.

Norway - Vehicles >3.5t GVW are mandatory to carry snow chains from October 15 to March 31. A truck with trailer must bring 7 chains. Onspot replaces the requirement for snow chains on the inner wheel of trucks over 3.5 tonnes.

Poland - Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and ice. Adequate traffic signs on roads where snow chains are compulsory.

Portugal - Snow chains temporarily compulsory when indicated by traffic signs (only happens in highest areas).

Romania - Vehicles >3.5t GVW have to be equipped with snow chains, which need to be mounted when indicated by respective traffic signs.

Russia - Snow chains are recommended but not compulsory.

Serbia - Snow chains for drive axle must be carried in the vehicle.

Slovakia - Snow chains must be carried in vehicle. Use according to traffic signs and conditions.

Slovenia - Snow chains must be carried in vehicles >3.5t GVW if no winter tires are fitted.

Spain - Snow chains allowed when indicated by traffic signs or the authorities. Snow chains only permitted on roads covered with snow and ice.

Sweden - All heavy vehicles, regardless of nationality, must have winter tires or equivalent equipment during the period 1 December to 31 March. Equivalent equipment includes tire chains and snow chains. Onspot is classified as equivalent equipment .

Switzerland - If authorities announce snow chain obligation, only snow chains are permitted (four-wheel drive vehicles may be excluded). Use of snow chains in case of respective road signs and conditions.

Turkey - Snow chains recommended to be carried in the vehicle and to be used on roads covered with snow and ice.

Ukraine - Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and ice.

United Kingdom - Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow and ice.
